Professor Cowan started his teaching career as an adjunct professor of law and director of the Communications Law program at the UCLA School of Law in 1972. He then spent 22 more years teaching in different capacities at UCLA, at one point winning the UCLA Distinguished Lecturer Award in 1985. In 1996, Professor Cowan arrived at USC as the new Dean of the Annenberg School for Communication. After stepping down in 2007, Cowan was given the prestigious title of University Professor. Since then, Cowan has taught a number of classes touching on journalism, media, and entrepreneurship. He has supported the Public Diplomacy, Specialized Journalism, and Communication programs in various capacities. Below are descriptions of the two classes that Professor Cowan will be teaching this fall semester.
The Changing World of Communication and Journalism (ASCJ 100) | Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:30 PM
The Power and Responsibility of the Press (JOUR 200w) | Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 to 12:20 PM
In Journalism 200w, students will explore the role of journalism and social media in society – its influence on government, technology, business, national security, sports, science and entertainment. Journalism 200w is open to all undergraduates of any major.
The Practice: Journalism’s Evolution as a Practice (JOUR 505) | July 20-21, All-Day
In Journalism 505, students will analyze the history, ethics and evolution of journalism and be introduced to key innovations and innovators in journalism history as well as multimedia platforms. Journalism 505 is intended for graduate journalism students and will be taught as a two-day summer course.
